  PORTLAND PICKS FOR MEN
  life + style to you
February 22nd, 2008

Though we've done our due diligence this week in bringing you the best of Portland, we're gonna be honest … we just didn't feel like writing a clever intro.  In lieu of that, here is a soliloquy from "Ghostbusters" as delivered by a possessed Rick Moranis. Enjoy.

“Gozor the Traveler will come in one of the pre-chosen forms.  During the rectification of the Vuldronaii, the Traveler came as a very large and moving Torb. Then of course in the third reconciliation of the last of the Meketrex supplicants, they chose a new form for him, that of a Sloar. Many Shubs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Sloar that day I can tell you.”

The Times, They Are A Changin'

There's a big difference between fashion and style.  Style can extend beyond clothes and into all aspects of one's life.  It can manifest itself in the books you read, the drinks you order, the car you drive—everything.  However, the man with true style knows when to focus his eye on fashion.  And for this modern gentleman a trip to Michael Allen's Clothier is of the utmost importance.

Expanding their established custom clothing store, the new larger downtown location allows Michael Allen's to add more casual and urban clothing to their repertoire.  Labels like Nicole Farhi and EubiQ NY add a modern contrast to more traditional, hand-sewn custom suits, shirts, ties and more.  They’ve also beefed up the collection of accessories like bags, briefcases and cuff links.

Don't fret though.  They still take their time with the custom stuff.  They'll even do custom ski, resort, and golf apparel.  Yes, golf apparel.  Which means you can hit the links in style this season.  It won't cure your slice, but you'll look good—and that's way more important.

Someday is Everyday

You love your favorite bar. You know the bartenders and more importantly they know you.  You have your barstool or booth, allowing for a good view of the local talent (or TV screens).  You know the music and drinks will be good (or at least cheap, if it's a dive).  Still, something's wrong, since you're bored out of your freakin' mind!

At Someday Lounge boredom will never be an issue.  Besides having a rad bar, Someday Lounge has the most eclectic mixture of entertainment in Portland.  They have everything: dance, theatre, spoken word, film, live music and DJs (playing everything from hip-hop to classical, rock to opera) and more.  And although art is their forté, they've been known to host carnivals featuring jugglers, aerialists, clowns (not the kind that'll creep your date out), geeks and unicyclists.

And even on a mellow evening they boast a great atmosphere.  The lighting is perfect and the old-style brick walls channel the upper-west side.  Add to that cool art and a cozy balcony overlooking the stage, and you have great place to overcome your boredom.

Surely You Jest

In our beautifully grey town, the music scene flourishes.  Bands creep up through cracks in the sidewalk and there is nowhere to run, or hide.  Don't get us wrong, we love it—but sometimes the performers take themselves a bit too seriously, or the crowd does, or both.  Some nights we need an alternative from "Alternative" and really just need a laff and a break from urine-soaked, cigarette butt-laden bathrooms.

It's time for "Comedy, Class and Cocktails" and just our luck, that's the motto of the new Jester Comedy Club in Beaverton.  In an open dining room/theater space you can order up dinner, drinks and snacks to accompany the celebrated cut-ups on stage—a gamble that your mouth will not be occupied with laughter.  Don't forget to sit in the front if you want to be professionally berated.

We went down to see Larry Omaha—he kept us in stitches, and judging by his talent we look forward to seeing who might be rolling through in the future.  Check out their ever-rotating schedule online to schedule the funny.

Office Jams

We consider an office audio set-up (besides our ear buds) a must.  And we desire something that sounds exceptional at lower volume but more unique and stylish than a Bose Wave.  For one with true verve, seek the Tivoli Model One.

A creation of legendary audio designer Henry Kloss, the TMO is a stellar example of classic meets contemporary.  Available in white or maple (we prefer the latter), it's priced right, and just waiting for your iPod.

This is Soooo Portland

The nation-leading number of Stumptown drivers going green will be giddy with this product.  G-Oil by Green Earth Technologies is made from American-grown base oils, providing an enviro-friendly alternative to your Penzoils.  At about the same price as synthetics, the bottles are 100% recyclable, and even have soy ink on the biodegradable labels.

Our favorite part?  After 3,000 miles, just mix the used oil with G.E.T.'s Disposoil and fertilize your lawn, saving a trek to the containment center.

Come Clean

Though it's been decades since we gave up bath time and relinquished our rubber ducky for the more adult shower, we see nothing wrong with elevating this daily ritual to something a bit more luxe.

Which is why we invested in the DTV shower system by Kohler. Its design allows for six different user presets that control everything from the hydro-massage speed to water temperature.  Program your ideal shower and enjoy it at the touch of a button.
