February 29th, 2008
The last couple of weeks were full of rarities. We saw a full lunar eclipse, our girlfriend employ reason and logic in an argument, and a sex scandal that involved a Republican and get this. . . A Woman! Hell, even today, the 29th of February, only happens every four years. We wonder if the weekend will be as unpredictable.
In light of all the unusual events, we are introducing a new feature this week. We call it "What Are You Wearing?" and it's a nod to those Portland gents who we feel are doing it right in the style department. Our fashion writer is combing the streets of downtown, so dress your best—it could be you!
ps: Single and hating it? Do something about it. Forward this issue of PPFM to 5 friends and CC picks@portlandpicksformen.com and you could win 2 free passes to "Happy Hour for the Single Professional" March 6 at Vino Paradiso, sponsored by PPFM, Willamette Week and It's Just Lunch. See the Hip Happenings for more details on this low-key way to meet and mingle. |

Couture for the Masses
Fashion can be an expensive hobby. The deeper you get into it, the more you spend. You start paying attention to labels, fabrics, cuts, and before you know it, you've dropped a grand on one outfit. When you're on a budget it really pays to have a list of spots with the best deals. Collier Place should be on that list.
Located in Pioneer Place downtown, Collier has been wowing fashion savvy Portlanders for a while now, but it's the new Collier Place that raises the bar. Set to open soon in the same mall, "The Place" will focus on offering bargain prices on hot items from the flagship store. Think The Rack, but with Versace, Brioni, Cornelliani and the like. They also specialize in high-end denim like Momotaro and Kato that you'll most likely find nowhere else.
It’s not exactly free, but you’ll drop 600 smackers on a sharp new jacket that should have cost 900. So if you still spend a grand, you’ll walk out with a little more. And really, who doesn't love a bargain?

Only in Portland
Two things that Portland has a disproportionate amount of is vegans and strip clubs. Now, thanks to Casa Diablo the two have come together. That's right; Portland has the world's first vegan strip club! No longer do you have to leave your vegan friend at home (or even worse, bring him along and get the periodic "evil eye") while you choke down a steak at Acropolis.
Casa Diablo's food is not only vegan, it's good. In fact, they don't advertise that the food is vegan, and the patrons are none the wiser. Don't believe us? Try the food for free! Yup, a free lunch of beans, rice and tortilla soup is served all day with the purchase of a beverage. Besides free food, Casa Diablo has what all "gentlemen's club's" should have, beautiful women. Casa Diablo plans on up to twenty-four dancers nightly.
Still not convinced? Well, maybe the fact that it's smoke-free, and has no cover or drink minimum will do the trick. So what are you waiting for? Grab some friends (carnivores or not) and come scope some beautiful ladies.

Ride Like the Wind
The thrill of going balls out through the West Hills to prove our cycling street cred left something to be desired. Dirt perhaps … and maybe a stout frame on two knobby wheels and miles of single track. Fortunately for us, we found a like-minded community of downhill, free-ride, cross-country and cyclo-cross riders converging regularly at Trail Head Cycles.
Trail Head Cycles has provided local mountain bikers with white-knuckled forays into the Willamette Valley's network of trails since 2003 and is our current answer to asphalt and spandex. With guided group rides ranging from the scenic slopes of Forest Park to the technical single-track in Brown's Camp, adjectives like "burly" and "sick" will inevitably pock mark your vocabulary by day’s end with this motley crew.
You can rent hard-tails for $35 or high end full-suspension bikes for $70, all with the satisfaction that you will not look like you are shitting a bicycle, but rather riding one. Check out their community and trails link for solid info on trail conditions and upcoming events. If you mention Portland Picks for Men, the kind folks at Trail Head Cycles will give you 5% off your purchase—so ask for Bernie.

Ryuichi - Accounting/Financial Assistant
Ryuichi takes a casual look and kicks it up a notch with a sharp topcoat he got at Comme Ça back in Japan. (Google it!) He keeps his urban look from looking sloppy by adding one dressy piece. Good show. |

Catch the Sun
The more we can integrate solar power into our daily lives, the faster we can move away from our dependence on non-renewable sources. Messenger bags by Noon Solar help you take the first step by integrating solar power into a bag—capturing enough sunlight to power your cell phone and iPod.
Each bag is designed to allow you to place the solar panel facing the sun, or facing your body, and is a worthy example of simplicity and style.

Cut Out Your Wallet
For years we carried a small pocket knife, which we use more than you'd think. (See: letters, packages, etc.) But we must admit that around the office, we'd get the occasional odd glance from the nervous types in accounting. That is, until we bought this brushed-steel money clip from Zippo.
Complete with a discreet little blade, it can be custom engraved, which is always clutch for something holding your hard-earned dollars.

Share the Love
This one is for all the music junkies who prefer to let their friends do all the work. miShare is a smart little gadget for sharing files and play lists between iPods. No computer or cable is needed, and it's super easy to use. Just attach the source and target iPods and press miShare's big button to start the transfer.
The downside? Finding out that your friend had been walking around with Gwen Stefani tracks.
