  PORTLAND PICKS FOR MEN
  life + style to you
March 21st, 2008

We came up with so many deals for you guys this week, we didn't even write an intro. Instead, here's Dr. Evil describing his childhood from Austin Powers. Enjoy.

"Very well, where should I begin?  My father was a relentlessly self-improving boulangerie owner from Belgium with low-grade narcolepsy and a penchant for buggery. My mother was a fifteen-year-old French prostitute named Chloe with webbed feet.  My father would womanize, he would drink, he would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark.  Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament.  My childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons.  In the spring we'd make meat helmets.  If I was insolent, I was placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds.  Pretty standard, really. At the age of twelve I received my first scribe. At the age of fifteen, a Zoroastrian named Vilma ritualistically shaved my testicles.  There really is nothing like a shorn scrotum. At the age of eighteen, I went off to evil medical school.  From there..."

Hipster With a Heart of Gold

Most Portlanders possess a social conscience. We like to buy local. We think green. Even here at PPFM we like to do our part by stimulating the local economy and saving a few trees in the process by doing it all on the Web. One like-minded local shop we can really get behind is Eclectica.

Located on the hip strip of Hawthorne, Eclectica offers streetwear and urban apparel like screen-printed hoodies and tees alongside indie-label jeans and accessories. They're a huge vendor for the non-profit clothing line Rise Up, whose purpose is to educate third-world kids and liberate them from sweatshops and the like. They also carry the RZST line, also known for its socially charged artwork. Throw in some locally made Antic stuff and you've got a store with a heart big enough to match its style.

As Portlanders, we like to do our part (and, of course look good doing it), so head down to Eclectica and mention PPFM for 20% off of one of the most interesting selections in town.

Bike Appétit

Maybe even more than vegans and strip clubs (see issue 11), Portland is known for bicyclists. Whether they think everyone who doesn't hop on their fixed-gear every day is a gas guzzling pig or if they think that bikes are mere hood ornaments for their Hummer, Portlanders seem to feel strongly about this mode of transportation.

The proprietors of Little Red Bike Café are no exception. Everything at the café revolves around bikes; their logo is a little red bike (shocker!), and  their  entrees possess names like "Paper Boy," "The Messenger," and our favorite, "Zoo Bomb." Also, they offer a $.50 discount to all patrons who biked to the café, and they even have a bike-through window which is open after regular business hours.

Now you might be thinking, "I bet it's some kind of vegan health food joint." You'd be wrong;  there's  plenty of bacon and beef on the menu for you carnivores. Also, they offer plenty of sweets (check out the house-made ice cream). So grab your bike (or  your SUV) and check out this unique café.

Spill That Wine. . .

We're pretty particular about the wine bars we visit. It's hit and miss for us; sometimes a place is too spartan, leaving us feeling sort of cold (not good for a Pacific Northwest establishment). Sometimes it feels a bit too fancy and pretentious, which is not exactly comforting either.

Our ideal place has a warm, inviting atmosphere complete with a roaring fireplace and soft things to plant our butts on, good music, and above all, good vino! We found it all at Vicinato in Beaumont. With over forty wines being poured at any given time, there is always something for everyone in your party, and they serve some surprisingly delectable small plates with a Mediterranean influence. Local art adorns the walls in an already comfortable atmosphere. They run a great happy hour from 4-7,  plus they feature live music every Friday.

Vicinato means neighborhood in Italian, and this place really has a welcoming, neighborly vibe to it, no matter what 'hood you're from.  For the next week, you can mention PPFM for 25% off of your tab. Cheers.

Mandatory Gear:

  1

Suitably Breathable

In amassing your summer wardrobe, stand out from the often-recommended cotton khaki suit and go with linen. Infinitely more breathable, linen takes a lot of heat (no pun intended) for wrinkling too much. As any sartorialist knows, however, the wrinkles are part of linen's charm. And trust us on this: when you're at that outdoor summer wedding, you'll appreciate the added ventilation.

For a stylish cut at a decent price, check out the one from International Concepts.

Pocket Surround

We love our portable music device, but sometimes the sound leaves something to be desired. Which is why we will never travel again without the SurroundXi. It connects to any portable device, from the iPods to portable CD/DVD players to cell phones.

You can even copy MP3 files from your computer to your flash key and plug in. Utilizing Unique Weave™ technology, it delivers crystal clear sound. Brilliant.

Jigga Man

Our new favorite bar accessory is the Cube Jigger. Designed by Josh Owen, its six sides each hold different volumes of liquid gold--the six most standard measurements in cocktailing!  Now with one simple tool you can make the perfect drink.

From the Manhattans that your old man loves to drink when he comes to visit to the whatever-tinis that the ladies love, you'll be prepared. And the best part is, it takes up less space while looking oh so cool.

It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year

Ok, second best. Every spring, retailers make room for summer stock by discounting cold weather staples, which includes jeans even though we wear 'em all year. Some deals (and denim selections) are better than others. Our pick? Head to a favorite among the PPFM staff, Haberdashers, and get half off select denim when you mention us.
