  PORTLAND PICKS FOR MEN
  life + style to you
April 4th, 2008

So with the weather finally getting golf-worthy, we present Bill Murray's soliloquy from Caddyshack:

”So I jump ship in Hong Kong and make my way over to Tibet, and I get on as a looper at a course in the Himalayas A looper, you know, a caddy, a looper, a jock. So, I tell them I'm a pro jock, and who do you think they give me? The Dalai Lama, himself. Twelfth son of the Lama. The flowing robes, the grace, bald … striking. I'm on the first tee with him. I give him the driver. He hauls off and whacks one. Big hitter, the Lama. Long! Into a 10,000 foot crevice right at the base of this glacier! Do you know what the Lama says? ‘Gunga galunga. Gunga gunga da gunga.’ So we finish the eighteenth and he's gonna stiff me. And I say, ‘Hey, Lama! How about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know?’ And he says, ‘Oh, uh, there won't be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness.’ So I've got that goin’ for me ... which is nice.”

Organic Beer is Here

Hip? Check. Organic? Check. Great beer? Check, check! We know you'll agree after you've sipped some suds and chowed down on a slice of fresh pizza at HopWorks, Portland's newest brewery.

This spacious beer lover's hangout—much of it constructed with salvaged materials from the previous tenant's architecture—gives us a reason to wander down to Powell Boulevard. We stepped inside and quickly got into the mood of HopWorks' self described "industrial ski lodge" feel as we downed a seasonal organic and soaked in the copper-top bar.  The sparkling new beer taps called to us over and over again like sirens as the HopWorks staff went by our table with amazing-looking food in hand. We watched as one entered into an enclosed booth area, which was converted from an old vault, and we imagined how it would be locked up at night, guarding a passage down to the lower brewery room. But we digress.

Don't forget they have a beer garden planned for outdoor drinking on hot summer nights. We've already got our favorite spot picked out.

Rock 'N Clothes

We love to recycle. Don't we, Portland? If somebody's got something to get rid of, we'll find a way to reuse it—old cars, cell phones, magazines and just about anything you can think of. Fortunately, clothing is no exception. That's why you need to stop by Rock N' Rose.

Coming up on their one year anniversary, Rock N' Rose specializes in primarily casual 70's and 80's vintage clothing, shoes and accessories. They also carry some new stuff from Northwest labels T-Rex (out of Portland), Organik (from Tacoma), and Legionnaire (based in Medford). On top of all that, they're in a completely Green space made with sustainable bamboo, energy saving bulbs, and all of that good stuff.

They'll be throwing an anniversary party tonight, April 4, complete with an art opening and 20% off their already great prices, so there's no better time to check them out. Now, if someone can just come up with a way for us to wear Styrofoam and disposable diapers we'd have it all solved. Derelicte?

Living the Life

Every time we get the boys together to watch a game there's always that one stick in the mud that either won't hang out or comes along and ruins the game by talking about how sports are stupid. We found the solution at Life of Riley Tavern.

This place has it all. Upstairs is a great nonsmoking sports bar with plenty of HD TVs, a large selection of beer on tap, a full bar, and plenty of food including, half-pound burgers served with house-made chips or fries, and  several vegetarian options (because nine out of ten times, that friend who hates sports doesn't eat meat, either).

Downstairs is a second "dive" style bar (or at least as close as you can get in the Pearl) which provides pool tables, shuffleboard, darts and video poker. Also, smoking is permitted downstairs, which allows our nic-fit friends a short respite during commercials. Oh, and since it's the Pearl District, it lacks the toothless women one normally encounters in similar taverns. Luckily, we have no friends who like those places—or those women. (Right?)

Speaking the Same Language

After some time spent in Manchester a while back, we found that some habits of the Englishmen stuck with us.  Not surprisingly, nothing of the culinary variety. But we found that they rightfully swear by King Of Shaves products.

From shave oils and moisturizers to brilliant (and unnoticeable) mattifying products, it's everything to keep your mug in fightin' form, and even with the flailing of the dollar, very affordable. We were so grateful that we're considering telling them about dentistry.

(Grand) Father Time

We love throwing old-school accessories into our wardrobe.  We're not talking socks with braces or anything. More like a car boy cap or a classic tie clip. A consistent bet is a vintage watch from Girards.

The best stuff came out around WWII, and most of these pieces have a natural patina and loads of character. With dozens of choices, you're sure to find one to enhance your style. Because including a touchstone to the past in your look is, in itself, timeless.

Taking Care of Business

There's no need to be thrifty when it comes to covering your most precious possessions.  Happily, there are upgrade options in the underwear department.

We like the "Posh" underwear by C-IN2 at Under U 4 Men, available in four elegant cuts, at both their downtown and Bridgeport stores. Made from Micro-Modal fiber (from the beechwood tree—who knew?), it upgrades your options with style and comfort. Taking care of business, indeed!

Remember in the above-titled movie, when Seth Rogan tries to explain to a young McLovin that bars are not the place to meet women, but rather farmer's markets?  Whether or not that's true remains to be seen. Of all the established reasons, however, the Portland F.M. has it goin’ on. Enjoy the bounty.
