  PORTLAND PICKS FOR MEN
  life + style to you
June 20th , 2008

We are going to go ahead and say it: We don't see what the fuss is over Scarlett Johansen. Don't get us wrong, she's good looking and all. But we can name three girls in our senior class of high school that, with the same hair and makeup team, would be hotter. Have we just been conditioned to think she’s hot?

Maybe it’s her uber-vapid acting style, or maybe the blank stare we always see on her face, but we'd rather pine after any number of hotties out there with a little something more to offer.

Take Lara Logan for instance. She’s the chief foreign correspondent for CBS news. That means she's embedded with navy seals in Afghanistan for four months at a time, and is on par with Lara Croft in terms of sheer bad-assery. Why is this not a woman we desire with at least the same fervor as S.J.? Perhaps it because she is more substantive, and as much as we say we like a challenge, we really just want the pretty face.

Tell you what, we'll split the difference. Jessica Alba, anyone?

Behold: The Power of Fit

There are two striking differences when it comes to clothes purchased off the rack as opposed to having them custom made. One is that a master tailor can fit you for a garment which can hide the fact that you've been lax in your exercise regimen. Two (and this is especially true in the case of dress shirts), one can wind up actually paying less for a more quality fabric.

That's where Kash Ross of Custom Dress Shirts comes in. A master tailor (a rarity in these parts), he has been at it in the same location since 1970, and for about a hundred bucks a shirt, there is no reason to buy off the rack ever again. Especially when one considers that a "fine" dress shirt by a designer can be made with inferior fabric and run you twice as much.

Perhaps it is because his son just graduated from college, but he has renewed interest in seeing younger gents discover the power of fit. Mention PPFM for the rest of the month to receive a free shirt when you buy two and get a free fitting.

Drive Down Memory Lane

For most of us the thought of our first car brings back fond memories. Cruising around with the stereo blaring was one of our favorite pastimes in high school. Unfortunately somewhere down the road we started taking driving for granted.

Not at Mobile West. These guys love cars and music and it shows. In fact, the owner himself shows off his ride's sound system with the infectious enthusiasm of 16-year-old. Not only is the staff excellent, so is the merchandise. Mobile West carries a wide selection of high-quality speakers, CD players and amplifiers by JVC, Alpine and Pioneer. The standout brand, however, is Exile; a car audio company which the staff will proudly inform you is based in Portland.

If you're not in need of a car stereo, no problem. Mobile west offers car alarms, video monitors, Bluetooth kits, navigation equipment and cell phones. Best of all, the store is locally owned and operated. So do yourself a favor, head down to Mobile West and fall in love with driving all over again.

Enter the Dragon

Portland is known for many things, but what it may be best known for—and we are most proud of—is the great variety of beer. Nowhere is this Portland spirit embodied more fully than at Green Dragon Bistro & Brewpub.

Green Dragon has an extensive selection of beers on tap (19 to be exact) which change periodically to keep things interesting. Our favorites right now are the light yet extremely flavorful Paulaner Pils and the potent (10%) but tasty Devil Dog IPA. Also, Green Dragon hosts "Meet the Brewer" every Tuesday, when a different brewer comes to serve their beers, answer questions, and take input (or insults, if you disapprove).

Since knocking down a couple of cold ones makes us work up quite an appetite, it's a good thing that Green Dragon has a killer menu. While Green Dragon has the usual pub fare, the standouts are their Southern inspired dishes like Chicken Fried Steak and Creole Catfish, and desserts which include seasonal cobblers and Mudd pie. You're welcome, Portland!

One More Snooze

Unless you are a true morning person, you probably roll just like us out of bed—reluctantly.

That is why we eliminate one morning chore by choosing the next day's outfit the evening before. This is not a new practice, as there is a classic piece of furniture for men for just this purpose. The valet. A one-stop station holding everything you need to get dressed in the morning, it also adds a classic touch to your boudoir.

Living in Perfect Harmony

Somewhere along the way we lost sight of the true purpose of the remote control—to make life easier as we sit on our asses. These days, we have to futz with five different remotes just to turn the TV on.

Now you can wield absolute power in your living room with just one remote. Enter the Logitech Harmony One Remote. It has a full-color touch screen and a super easy to use interface, and best of all, it can replace up to 15 remotes.

Pass the Gas

With gas prices surpassing the crazy expensive mark, we've turned to pedal power to get us around town and tricked out the cruiser with a Cateye Mighty 8 Bike Computer. It's like a speedometer and training log all in one.

The computer displays your current speed and records all sorts of other useful info you can cycle through while you ride. Best of all, it costs far less than a tank of gas.

  Brew of the Week:

We all know that Widmer was able to create a brew that actually was enhanced by a slice of lemon. Well, Blue Moon has seen their lemon and raised them an orange. This full-bodied but crisp brew is best enjoyed in the company of citrus, and under a blue moon if possible. And you're in luck—on June 30 the B.M. will be visible, so grab a sixer now. Wait, the 30th is a ways off… better make it twelve.

Who Needs a Guitar?

If you lack the musical chops to lay down a mind-bending guitar riff, fear not. The U.S. Air Guitar Championships may be your ticket to stardom without ever learning music theory. What competitors lack as musicians is compensated for with excessive stage antics and larger-than-life personas. This spectacle is not to be missed.

What: US Air Guitar Championships
When: Tuesday, June 24, 9 pm
Where: Dante's, 1 SW 3rd Ave.
Tickets: www.ticketwest.com

Young Guns

After toiling away for months at what must be the best after-school program in the world, the students from Paul Green's School of Rock will perform classics from Bowie's Ziggy Stardust. If you can't have fun watching glammed-out tweens whale out Suffragette City, then you're dead inside.
