life + style to you

June 27th, 2008
There went spring! Did you miss it? It was the week and a half between those cold rainy days and our current 90+ degree temperatures. Seriously, what a gyp. We suffer through the whole winter, only to go straight to summer? Oh well, at least there will only be a week and a half of allergies. There are only so many conversations we can have where we sound like Fran Drescher.
Spend all your money on spring apparel? No sweat. Just forward this issue of PPFM to 10 friends or co-workers and CC picks@portlandpicksformen.com. We'll pick one of you at random to win a $50 gift certificate to Couture Cat. You know, so you can pick up some summer duds. |

Fashion That's Unparalleled
Ever since we rounded the big 3-0 we keep running into the same problem: How do we dress hip yet casual? Can we still rock a T-shirt? How about those skinny jeans? To answer these questions (which btw, are “yes” on the tee and a big “NO” on the skinnies) and find age-appropriate, relaxed gear, you need look no further than Parallel.
Parallel, which opened less than three weeks ago, specializes in apparel for fashionable professionals who want to be able to head from work to a night on the town without stopping home. This is made possible by their nice selection of button-ups, sweaters, blazers and slacks by Shipley & Holmes, Tovalta, and Cassette, which are hip and comfortable enough to wear to a club, but classy enough to sport at the office. Their standout line, however, is Nom De Guerre. They construct many of their garments out of waxed cotton, making them sleek and water-resistant.
Do yourself a favor—skip the trip to Urban Outfitters and head down to Parallel. And tell them PPFM sent you.

Really Fast Food
Sometimes you're hungry now. For those occasions, you need Sushiville. As soon as you sit down, you can start eating. No long lines, no agonizing over the menu choices, no waitress who's going to leave your food sitting out for ten minutes while she flirts with another customer.
As the conveyor belt piled with plates of tasty sushi passes by in front of you, you can pick up whatever looks delicious and start popping those rice rolls like an addict with his pills. Filled with crab, salmon, avocado and cream cheese, any self-control you had when you entered is bound to disintegrate after you get your first taste. And with most dishes ranging from $1.25–$2.75, even a skyscraper-sized stack of finished plates isn't likely to hurt your wallet nearly as much as it will the arms of whatever unlucky sap has to carry them away.
So the next time you realize your time is far too precious to let eating get in the way, drop by Sushiville and let dinner revolve around you.

Hops Heaven
Want to feel young again? Walk into Belmont Station. Seeing it for the first time and witnessing the sheer monstrosity of their beer selection will make you feel like a kid in a candy store. If candy could get you crocked, that is.
The Station stocks an overwhelming array of bottles from the United States and abroad, including beer-making juggernauts Belgium, Germany, and England. If you've been looking for a particular style or brand but haven't been able to track it down—maybe an authentic German Hefeweizen, or a mega hoppy IPA you have fond memories of consuming once upon a time—it's probably here. Even if you're not a self-professed beer snob, there's a good time to be had just perusing the coolers and making a few impulse buys. A stout from Russia? A bock from Lithuania? A "Super" beer from India? They’re here.
As if that weren't enough, Belmont serves draught beer and offers a ton of cool stuff—from nifty beer glasses to T-shirts to beer-flavored mustards and English candy bars. Heaven's got nothing on the Station.

Nice Balls
The Italians have given us so much—Sophia Loren, baked ziti, and the pinnacle of all leisure sports: bocce ball. There is something wholly satisfying about throwing big balls at smaller ones and we're always up for sports that allow us to work a beverage into our free hand.
Check out Perfetta's handcrafted Italian Pro Bocce Set. The traditional red and green balls are made of solid composite resin and come with their own carrying case.

Take a Seat
The old man had it right with his favorite chair. You know the one—it bore his imprint from years of excessive use. Follow in his footsteps and claim a chair of your own that offers a bit more style than an overstuffed La-Z-boy.
Enter the Wine Barrel chair from Whit McLeod. These collapsible seats are fashioned from discarded White Oak wine barrels and have adjustable seat and back angles. Even cooler, each chair carries the name of the winery where the barrel was used.

Simplify, Simplify, Simplify
It’s getting so we don’t know whose side of the shower we’re on—we have amassed as many products as the little lady. So we’re on a mission to simplify and get down to the basics.
Like Zia Natural’s Triple Action Wash. It hits the trifecta—face, hair and body—and it’s mild enough to get rid of dirt and odor without stripping skin of essential nutrients. In other words, it’s gentle enough for a woman, but made for a man.

Tracktown IPA
In celebration of the Olympic Trials in Eugene, this one is a hop-head’s paradise. This unfiltered Northwest-style India Pale Ale introduces a big floral hop character to the aroma, flavor and finish. Hops, hops, hops from front to back—but nicely offset with a malty richness that prevents this ale from being overbearing. And no chemicals, additives or preservatives. Now that is so northwest.

He’ll be chatting up his book, On the Lower Frequencies, A Secret History of the City. Powell’s calls it “a manual, a memoir, and a history of creative resistance.” Cool.
