July 11th, 2008
Four old college buddies are on the golf course. One old-timer hits into the trees, and while he’s trying to retrieve his ball, the other three start talking about family. Eventually getting around to bragging on their sons, the first one says, “My son is making so much dough on Wall Street that he could afford to buy a good friend of his a new car.” The next one says, “That’s nothing! My boy is senior partner at his law firm and just bought his friend a new boat.” Next guy says, “My son is the most accomplished neurosurgeon in the nation and just bought his friend a new house.”
When the fourth old-timer comes back to the group, he apologizes for taking so long. The other three men (snickering) say, “Yeah, we’ve just been talking about our sons—how’s your boy?”
"Well," says the man, "As you know, he's a confirmed bachelor." Laughing, the men say, "That's a real shame." To which the man replies, "No, it's all right, he has great friends. One bought him a car, one bought him a boat, and one just bought him a house!”
Forward this issue of PPFM to five buddies, and CC picks@portlandpicksformen.com for a chance to win two rounds of golf at Colwood Golf Club—and bring a good friend! |

On Golden Wings
As we've aged, we've had to start to watch the ol' waistline. However, sometimes we throw caution to wind and indulge our appetite for fried food. And when we do, there's nowhere we’d rather go than North Portland for some diet-busting hot wings.
Fire On The Mountain makes the best wings we've encountered in this city—they're made from scratch daily and fried to crispy perfection. But what really makes these wings so delicious are the ten unique sauces, including Sweet BBQ, Raspberry Habanero and Spicy Peanut. And wings are not their only specialty; they also offer great sides such as sweet-potato fries, fried mushrooms and fried pickles (you read that right). Also, since no dinner is complete without dessert, Fire On The Mountain serves call-your-doctor-first treats like fried Twinkies and Oreos. And perhaps best of all, pitchers of Rainer are only $5 (and you'll need a couple after all those wings).
We offer only one caveat: do not make plans immediately afterward, as you will not be ambulatory for several hours. But it's completely worth it.

Fortress of Comics Dudes
No one wants to feel like a geek, but let's face it, some of us have needs. Like for stories told in colorful stapled publications through sequential frames, and usually involving the words BAM, POW, and THWACK. Fortunately, Cosmic Monkey Comics has come to the rescue by being a laid-back, hip hotspot to satisfy your twisted obsession with comic books.
Though it's got a veritable Batcave full of graphic novels, Manga paperbacks, walls of recent comics, and row after row of longboxes filled with back issues, the comparisons with a dank subterranean cavern stop there. Clean, well-lit, and tastefully decorated, Cosmic Monkey may just fool you into thinking that a fascination with spandex-clad men and women beating each other up is perfectly rational and sane.
Of course, if you're into the quieter, more personal stories, or the quirkier and more imaginative stuff, that's okay, too; the Monkey doesn't discriminate against indie publications and has one of the best collections in town of offbeat, independent comics. So stow the secret identity and fly on in!

Tapping the Manna of Beervana
For a town so enamored with craft beer, there are precious few bars that actually offer a comprehensive selection of the finest local and regional options. Bailey's Taproom is one of the proud few, an oasis in the middle of downtown Beervana, pouring all the greatest beers you've never heard of before.
With twenty always-rotating taps that span the entire West Coast, and a hefty bottle list of beers from across the U.S., Bailey's is your best bet for experimenting with new styles or indulging in your favorite hard-to-find pint. Plus, if you can't narrow your options down to just one beer, they offer sampler trays that allow you to taste any five brews that pique your interest.
Best of all, the mellow atmosphere, comfy couches, board games, and outdoor seating reduce the pretension factor to nil. Grab an Imperial pint of whatever looks good and start up a conversation with a stranger—or recruit a group of friends to help you through a couple sampler trays and challenge you to a game of inebriated Connect Four.

Cascade Lakes Monkey Face Porter
Let’s celebrate Oregon Craft Beer Month with the strangely named but quite tasty Monkey Face Porter. It’s a medium-bodied, robust-style Porter with significant roast character from chocolate and black malts. This beer finishes extremely dry with a hint of Willamette Hops, and it’s just plain perfect after a long day at the mountain or on the river.
