  PORTLAND PICKS FOR MEN
  life + style to you
July 18th, 2008

Last weekend we did our annual three-day trek down the Rogue River. Sure we got sunburn and mosquito bites, but when did we start getting this sore? Our signifigant other noticed too, and called us old. Then, while we were picking out fabric, our tailor (who is twice our age) commented on how we had "old-man taste." And to top it all off, one of Portland's Finest (pan-handlers) called us a suit!

Where do these people get off calling us old?

We're gonna go think about it on the porch while we whittle.

Board Shorts That Won't Leave You Bored

We remember our first pair of board shorts; they were long, comfy and, above all, fashionable. But lately, we've been noticing most of our options out there are lacking in the style department… then we heard that UnderU4Men was now offering board shorts in addition to their (world-class) selection of under-candy.

First up, we saw the reissue of the original board short from the 1940s. Speedo first created them to hang long, and out of a drape material to protect the knees of the surfers. We were enamored until we saw the swimwear from Ed Hardy. One of the best-known tattoo artists in the world, Hardy's designs are available on both boxers and shorts and would be a hit in both the bedroom and on the beach. Both items are only available at UnderU4Men.

We try to pop in periodically because their selection is always new and interesting, and while we love to visit the downtown store, we think it's a godsend that they maintain a Bridgeport Village store as well.  After all, we need something to do when our Lady drags us out for shopping excursions.

Come On Down To South Park…

The Northwest is home to some of the freshest, more delicious seafood in the U.S., but you may not realize just how flavorful our finned population can be if you haven't been dining at South Park. The downtown restaurant, located on the park blocks, has one of Portland's best seafood menus, plus a great variety of other dishes, expert cocktails, and original desserts—and we bet you haven’t been there in a while.

When you get there, be sure to ask about the fresh fish of the day—South Park usually features three, and crafts entrees to accentuate their best flavors. Consider the Farmer's Connection, which pairs locally farmed vegetables (or whatever the specialty of the day is) with the fish of your choice. If you're not in the mood for seafood, South Park also offers free-range chicken, pork chops, and a few excellent pasta choices. And be sure to save room for a Marionberry Mousse or Vanilla Bean Crème Brulee for dessert.

If you've been fishing for great seafood but came out empty-handed, cast out to South Park. Trust us: you'll be hooked.

Get Tanked

The east side of town has really come into its own. Mississippi has great boutiques; Alberta has cool, quirky art; but in our opinion, the Hawthorne District always has and always will be King of the East, and Tanker is its new King of Bars. Here's why:

Tanker's mixture of wood and steel, port windows, local art, padded sparkly vinyl booths and perfect lighting give it a great atmosphere. It has a deep selection of beer (15 on tap and 19 different tall cans), which range from Ninkasi to Mickeys, so you can have a nice micro or re-live your early drinking days with a 24-ouncer. Add to this a fully stocked bar, the fact that happy hour is five hours long, free WiFi, popcorn, Nintendo Wii, and a jukebox that has a great selection of indie and punk, and you have the perfect watering hole.

If after downing a few you find yourself hungry, you need not worry; Tanker has a great selection of gigantic and tasty grinders, hot wings, and (our favorite) Frito Pie. All aboard.

Is that a Screwdriver in Your Pocket…

In the past the only multi-tool available was the Leatherman, which, let's face it, looks ridiculous hooked to your belt unless you're wearing a pair of Carhartts and doing manual labor.

Luckily, we now have the Utili-Key 6-in-1 tool. Not only does this tool have a Phillips, a standard and an eyeglass screwdriver, plus a knife blade and bottle opener, but it's the size of an ordinary house key.

  Brew of the Week:

It’s Oregon Craft Beer Month, and we’re down to celebrate with each and every local brew. We’re starting with Bridgeport’s award-winning IPA. It’s brewed with a blend of five hop varieties so it’s got that full flavor you crave in an IPA, but with a citrusy aroma and only a hint of bitterness. It pours smooth, has a golden glow, and goes great with grilled salmon. We’re just saying.
