  PORTLAND PICKS FOR MEN
  life + style to you

July 25th, 2008

We rarely get out for the opening weekend of anything, but we were among the millions who made it a record-breaker for Batman. And it was worth braving the crowds. Nonstop action, incredible acting (good call on the Gyllenhall/Holmes swap), and a truly eerie performance by Heath Ledger, given the circumstances.

The whole thing made us crave adventure, and because we're getting too old to leap from tall buildings (see last week's intro) we are going to employ our wits at the one-day only HighTrek Adventure scavenger hunt that's coming to Portland. You can get in on the fun, too—just forward this issue to 10 friends and CC picks@portlandpicksformen.com for a chance to win free entry for a two-man team into the games.

Old-School Style

Our grandpa used to say about most things, "They just don't make ’em like they used to." Now that we're a bit older we realize he was right; whether it be cars or clothes, vintage is the way to go. And there’s something to be said about a man who appreciates timeless apparel.

No matter what you're looking for, if it's from the 40's through the 70's and it’s hip, Avalon Antiques & Vintage Clothes has got it. If you want something refined, we suggest a Sinatra-esque 50's tuxedo or a 60's mod blazer and slacks. Want to take it up a notch? Accent your suit with a vintage bow tie. Want something to lounge around the house in? Forgo the dumpy sweatshirts and go Hef-style in a nice smoking jacket. Looking to beat the heat? A nice Havana shirt is a cool and classy choice. Or, if you're in need of headwear, a vintage fedora or Stetson cowboy hat will cover your dome in style.

Make grandpa proud—pop into Avalon and gear up old-school.

The Sweetest Thing

You've just waded through a bland dinner with a date at some stuffy restaurant and the anemic-looking dessert tray isn't improving your outlook. Do yourself a favor and resuscitate the evening with chocolate.

Sweet Masterpiece is often open until midnight, and they have enough decadent desserts to repair even the most damaged of appetites. If your date loves chocolate (and if she doesn't, she's a man), she'll get turned on just looking at the multiple glass cases filled with truffles, cakes, cookies, brownies, and other cocoa-covered concoctions. We recommend ordering a slice of the Creamy Banana Fudge Cake or the Milk Chocolate and Cinnamon Honey Layer Cake to send her into convulsions. Wash it all down with a cup of coffee or tea, or if you need some chocolate with your chocolate, a Nutty Mocha or Cocoa Cappuccino.

Chocolate aside, the big comfy booths and mellow jazz playing over the stereo make the Masterpiece a great place to get to know your girl… and ensure that the rest of the night remains just as sweet.

Why Can't I Biscuit You?

Hard on the outside, soft on the inside, hot and salty and just a little sweet may describe your perfect woman, but for the folks at Pine State, that sounds like the recipe for the ultimate biscuit. Whether you're a southern-fried redneck or a yuppie Yankee or whatever's in between, you're sure to find a biscuit here that will warm your heart and fill your gut.

For those who like it simple, you can snag “the regular” with some butter or jam. For the more adventurous variety, eggs, cheese, bacon, fried chicken, pickles and milky white gravy are all delicious fillers between two biscuit halves. Chase it with a giant jar of sweet tea or a mug of Stumptown coffee and a plate of hash-brown potatoes for the complete stick-to-your-ribs breakfast experience.

Though seating is limited and this biscuit bar is small, it's the ideal place to stop in on a lazy Sunday morning with a friend. And now that the weather's nice, there's additional seating available outside for soaking in a little sunlight in addition to all that gravy.

The Tao of MP3

You often find the best electronics overseas, and this hot looking new MP3 player from Creative reinforces that. The Zen Krystal has a sweet front-side design with its blue LED display and center button.

It stores 4GB of digital audio and also offers useful "active person" functions like tracking how far and fast you ran as well as estimating how many calories you burned. That will come in handy when you’re trying to erase that Chow Mein.

Joker Poker

It comes out a little late for the movie, but the Batman: The Dark Knight Joker Poker Set offers a unique way for dad to teach junior his first hand.

A deck of 54 replica Joker cards from the movie, along with a standard 54-card deck, are included. You also get Joker-themed poker chips in four colors and a smart-looking black aluminum carrying case. It will make junior want to do his first diabolical Joker laugh when he crushes dad after a few hands.

It's Good to be Square

Three words: bigger sweet spot. Apparently, the folks at Nike heard us and developed a driver that empowers the everyman to perform like Tiger from the tee box. Enter the Nike SQ Sumo 2—square, squat and forgiving, it's helping us shave strokes off our golf game.

The secret's in the lightweight design, increasing the moment of inertia, helping to keep the ball on its intended target after a botched swing. If only Nike could develop a wonder club for our short game…

  Brew of the Week:

Did you know? The British colonists who visited India invented India Pale Ale. But we seriously doubt they ever enjoyed one after a day of kite-boarding. (What a shame.) This IPA has a full, malty body and there's even a hint of fresh citrus to it. Perfect after your favorite water sport … even if that happens to be the grueling drag-the-poolside-lounge-chair-into-the-sun event. Yes, you'll soon know why Full Sail IPA won Gold at the 2008 World Beer Championships.
