PORTLAND PICKS FOR MEN ™ |

life + style to you

August 8th, 2008
So, you've probably heard by now about the Bikini Coffee Company. The idea is simple; women in swimwear serve java to the public. First of all, this seems sort of base to us. Kind of like Hooters, it appeals to the lowest common denominator. And like Hooters, we feel that simply by walking in there we are giving off at least some sign of desperation. I mean, with all of the coffee options in this town, would it not be better to procure your morning perk from somewhere with a barista pedigree and look at bikini-clad women online?
That said, we checked it out (What? It is sort of our job), and we report back the following stats (on a scale of one to ten):
Coffee: 7
Girls: 8
Maybe it was the breasts and the coffee combined, but it got us to thinking; We need to start applying ourselves in the dating department. If you've been thinking the same, head down to our singles affair tonight at Vicinato Wine Bar. We've assembled many of the lovely, stylish readers from Portland Picks for you to mingle with. Plus free wine, and door prizes from HairM, McCormick & Schmick's and more. But the bottom line: cool girls. And proceeds help benefit the Red Cross.
It starts at 6 pm. See you there! |

It is Easy Being Green
Like most Portland residents we care about the environment. Unfortunately, the men’s clothes that many "green" shops carry are a bit too much on the hippie tip.
Fortunately we have Greenloop, an eco-friendly store whose apparel is not only sustainably manufactured, it's also hip. Greenloop’s standout labels include Loomstate, which specializes in premium graphic tees, jeans and hoodies made entirely from 100% certified organic cotton. Another line, Edun (pronounced "Eden"), created by Bono's wife, Ali Hewson, features hip tees made with traditional Incan vegetable dyes and slim-cut jeans that have uplifting poems embroidered inside their pockets. Our favorite, however, is Sameunderneath—a Portland-based company whose shorts, jackets, tees and shirts are extremely stylish; also, their garments are largely made from 100% biodegradable bamboo or from hand-combed cashmere, which is not only extremely soft but also obtained in a way that is beneficial for the animals it is derived from.
So, rinse off the patchouli and head down to Greenloop where the only outfit you can find more earth-friendly is your birthday suit. Bonus: 15% off when you use the code PPM15.

The Marco of Great Food
For the lucky folks living near Multnomah Village, an all-day breakfast or lunch, delicious gourmet dinner specials, and espresso to jolt you back to life are available right down the street. For everyone else, it's worth a bus trip out of downtown to indulge in the kind of home-cooked meal you wish Mom used to make.
Neighboring the idyllic community's small shops and quirky bars, Marco's Café fits right in with its upside-down umbrellas hanging from the ceiling and its policy of letting you order whatever the hell you want, regardless of the hour. Feeling like a plate of eggs and some pancakes at 8 pm to cure that 17-hour hangover? Go for it!
But if you're in the mood for something special, we'd recommend anything from their constantly rotating dinner menu. The entrees change nightly, so you could eat there every night for a year and never have the same meal twice. And if you can get through the mammoth portions, reward yourself with a slice of Triple Chocolate Cake and an espresso. Welcome to the neighborhood.

Even Video Couldn't Kill This Radio Star
Modest Alberta Street just got a dinosaur in its backyard. The latest restaurant and bar to spring up here is a quirky homage to the 50s, complete with art deco/diner feel, two floors of outdoor seating and a funky architectural design that looks completely out of place in this otherwise mellow 'hood.
No matter. Even if you have trouble absorbing the Radio Room's visual charms, you won't have any such difficulty with the menu's mishmash of tasty comfort foods like meatloaf and mashed potatoes or chicken and dumplings. Show up for brunch, happy hour, or dinner for stick-to-your-ribs meals that are reasonably priced. We recommend a plate of the polenta and rice Radio Cakes or the Croque Monsieur, a ham and cheese grilled sandwich with a French twist.
Try as you might, you can't miss the drinks menu, which spans several pages and includes a variety of good microbrews, a solid wine list and a creative hodgepodge of classic cocktails and fruity alcoholic refreshments. We liked the Upper Deck Lemonade, which combines hand-squeezed lemonade with Stolichnaya Citros and Razberi in a sugar-rimmed pint glass with a splash of raspberry puree. Zesty!

Brew of the Week: |

The Tsingtao Brewery was founded in 1903 by German settlers in Qingdao. And—no surprise—it’s crisp, slightly malty flavor and nutty sweet taste best complements spicy foods or flavorful Asian cuisine. Tsingtao Lager is brewed with the finest all-natural ingredients including domestically grown hops, high-quality barley and spring water from China's Laoshan mountain region. |

Art In Pocket
We've spent a lot of time perfecting our wardrobe, so why do ignore the one accessory we wear every day—our wallet?
db clay—a Portland-based company—makes fashionable wallets by transferring artwork onto textiles that tell a story and are aesthetically stunning. Also, these billfolds are not only hip, but they are made with an eco-friendly material that is extremely durable plus heat- and cold-resistant. So do yourself a favor and put a little art in your pocket.

Shoe Wars
We used to make fun of our lady for her shoe fetish, but we are (and we don't know when this happened) gaining on her. There's your casual kicks, your work kicks (brown & black, lace-ups & slip-ons), and of course your trainers. What we don't have is any available real estate to store them (she took that up long ago).
Enter the Rakku Shoe Pod. Stylish as they come, this handy item will store twelve pairs without getting in her way.

One problem with battery extenders for mobiles is they often kill the good looks. Not so, though, with the new mophie juice pack for iPhone 3G. This extender doubles as a non-slip, soft grip case, cutting down extra bulk.
The extra battery life (rechargeable) adds up to six hours of additional talk time, or 28 hours of audio playback. It also lets you connect and charge your iPhone at the same time when hooked to a PC.
