PORTLAND PICKS FOR MEN ™ |

life + style to you

August 15th, 2008
Every four years the Olympics come along to provide us with some entertainment while we wait for football season to arrive. This year's games are especially compelling, what with the whole "China" thing, the whole "Michael Phelps" thing, and of course our chance to redeem ourselves in the basketball arena. And then you got Bush out there… well, Bushin' it up.
It does make you remember how hungry non-pro athletes can be, and how fun it is to see that spirit of competition.
Wanna see more of that? Forward this issue of PPFM to 5 friends and cc picks@portlandpicksformen.com and you could win a four-pack of tickets to see the Portland Beavers game of your choice. |

It's Not Easy Being Green
Portlanders are, as a whole, a conscious bunch. Many of us bike to work, we support our local businesses, and recycle everything possible. Now, thanks to Olio United, we can dress responsibly as well.
Olio specializes in apparel that is not only fashionable, but green, sustainable and fair trade. If you are in need of a hip pair of jeans, try Good Society—they not only construct their denim from 100% organic cotton, but they’re a fair-trade company. For a stylish yet extremely comfortable sweater, we suggest a Covet hoodie made from sustainable cotton and bamboo. If you fancy a new T-shirt, Apolis Activism (which donates a portion of the proceeds to different non-profits) offers a stylish selection, all made in the U.S.
If you really want to use the least amount of natural resources and get, in our opinion, the best-looking apparel, we suggest you purchase one of Olio's reconstructed blazers or jackets; our favorites of which are made by the Canadian company Preloved. So do yourself (and the planet) a favor and stop by Olio United. Mention PPFM and receive 15% off your purchase.

Drift On In
The area east of PGE Park and west of downtown isn't known for its nightlife, but there is one special oasis hidden among the otherwise empty streets.
Tucked inside the Hotel deLuxe, the Driftwood Room is old-school cool with wood paneling and a design aesthetic out of an early Bond film. Small and intimately lit, with plenty of couches and cushioned seating, the ambiance is perfect for an after-dinner date or after-work cocktail at the bar. But the highlight of this lounge is definitely its service; the bartenders are professional, creative, and know their liquor stock backward and forward. Consider ordering the house Martini, a French Mojito, or their classic Mallory Manhattan, or if you're feeling especially adventurous, order The Bartender's Mood to get an original work of art in a chilled glass.
If you're feeling ravenous, gourmet Gracie's next door will deliver hot appetizers, but for a rare treat, get the Mint Julep Ice Cream Sandwich with Hot Bourbon Fudge. If you can't make it home after that, just remember, you are in a hotel.

It's a Doggy Dog World
It's often said, "as American as baseball and apple pie." Well, with baseball being plagued with scandals and the fact that we aren't huge fans of fruit, we feel that it's the hot dog which is truly American.
Nick's Famous Coney Island Food is a Portland icon. Residing in the Hawthorne District for more than 70 years, Nick’s has attracted numerous athletes and celebs thanks to its great atmosphere and food. Nick's wrap-around bar and walls clad with sports memorabilia provide a great 50's-style diner feel. The food is also a winner, especially “The Wing Commander”, a pound of delicious chicken drumsticks, and “The Hubcap,” which is literally a hubcap piled high with fries and served with delicious Coney Sauce. However, if you truly want the Nick's experience, get a Coney Dog—it will send you to doggy heaven. And no worries if you're not a meat-eater—a veggie dog can be substituted.
Head on down to Nick's for a dog and a beer or booze (Nick's is adding a full bar in the coming weeks). God bless America!

Grooming Tip of the Week: |
| |
|

Ever wonder how to get rid of those pesky blackheads? Forget the urge to apply steel wool and Windex! No surprise, they are too harsh on your skin, and it's likely that the products cluttering your lady's bathroom cabinet are too confusing. Let the pros at HairM freshen your face, remove blackheads, and cool your summer skin with a Cucumber Face Treatment. And yeah, and it feels pretty great too. Mention PPFM this month and save $20 on your treatment.

Return of the Dragon
We have a tough time finding sunglasses sometimes. To tell you the truth, the uber-expensive brands (you know the ones) don't really cut it for us, plus we've never been ones to flaunt our money via our eyewear.
Recently, though, we happened upon a couple different pair (to go with different outfits of course) while shopping for snow goggles (what? we like deals). Dragon Eyewear has apparently been churning out an extremely stylish line that protects our peepers while complementing our wardrobes.

Yes, We Are That Lazy
Look, we're green and all, but we're not quite ready to pack into Smart Cars for long road trips. The solution? The new street-legal vehicle from EZ Go, which can be operated on any city street with a 35 MPH or less posting.
It’s completely electric, and affordable enough that you don’t have to give up your “real” car to own one. It has headlights/tail lights, seatbelts, a horn, and a cover (this is Portland), and it’s perfect for getting around town and completing day-to-day affairs. Bonus: Customize to your Pac-10 school colors!

Just Don't Lose It
How thin is thin enough for your digital camera? Sony's got a thin one indeed in its new 10-megapixel DSC-T77. This guy is less than 5/8 of an inch with a 3-inch, 16 x 9 touch-panel LCD screen.
Despite being so anorexic, it does have a good number of features. We don’t know how to use them yet, but you can brag about “intelligent scene recognition” and “face-detection technologies,” plus eleven scene modes and in-camera image management.

Brew of the Week: |
| |
|

Sierra Nevada Summerfest
This one is perfect for… you guessed it… summer! The prerequisite of any summer brew is to be crisp and refreshing—and light enough for a long session. Where this one takes it up a notch over other summer brews is that it maintains enough complexity for connoisseurs and enough assertiveness to cut through a spicy bbq sauce.
