  PORTLAND PICKS FOR MEN
  life + style in Stumptown
December 19th, 2008

We hate to jinx anything here, but Portland seems to be handling the current crises like absolute champs. If you are among those lucky Stumptowners who are weathering the storms (financial and otherwise), please remember to give your time and money wherever possible.

We promise it will assuage any guilt when you hit those after-holiday sales, or order up some of our Mandatory Gear Best Of’s (see below) after stuffing your faces with Christmas ham.

And because many of you have guests in town next week, look for the next issue to be full of our staff’s picks for 2008’s best bars, restaurants, and stores. (Gratuitous Photo of the Year, anyone?)

Merry Christmas and Happy Chanukah.

You’ll Flip Your Lid

The recent cold front caught us a bit off guard. Although we heard the reports, the idea of snow and temperatures in the teens after a fairly mild fall just seemed unreal. The result of our denial was that we had to schlep around town in our less than dapper ski garb looking for gear that was not only warm, but stylish. And since up to 50% of body heat is lost through the head, we started there first.

Luckily, finding classy headwear was a breeze thanks to The Dapper Cap. Numerous brands abound which include dressier lines such as Bailey, Dobbs and Stetson, who offer fedoras, derbys and porkpies. A bit more casual but nonetheless stylish lines include Kangol and Goorin, which offer newsboys, berets, beanies and military styles, and embroidered, graphic ball caps. If, however, you have a few extra dollars, we suggest a designer top hat by Eugenia Kim, which will have you looking top notch.

Mention PPFM for 15% off, and stay warm and stylish with a new dome piece from The Dapper Cap.

Get Blitzed… Again!

When it comes to getting your drink on, the west side may be far easier to get around with its mass transit and shorter distances, but the east side has one major advantage: a lot more space.

Consider Blitz on SE 11th. Comparing it to its west-side cousin in the Pearl is like comparing a humpback whale to a minnow. Open for a little over two months, this Blitz is a cavernously huge space that stretches so far back that you may get winded walking to the bathroom. Fortunately, there are plenty of places to catch your breath, whether it’s on a couch in the lounge area, in a booth for dinner, at a picnic table at the front, or atop a bar stool. With all the extra space comes more entertainment, too, including pool, foosball, and shuffleboard tables, flat screens, arcade games, a dart board and pinball machine and (occasionally) live music, free movies, and cheap drink deals.

Amidst all the diversions, don’t forget the 20 beer taps or the $4 happy hour menu featuring munchies like “totchos” (tater tots and nachos). Brilliant!

Orange You Hungry?

We don't think it's too soon to say that NoPo is becoming the new hotspot for great Portland dining. In the past year, a number of great restaurants and bars sprung up in an area that used to be dominated by fast-food joints.

The latest entry to the pantheon is Casa Naranja on N. Mississippi. Currently decked out with Christmas lights and plenty of modern art hanging on the walls, the restaurant is run out of an old house, and manages to pull off the homey/comfortable vibe perfectly. The cuisine runs the gamut of American gourmet dishes, but seems to specialize in seafood with a slight Spanish twist. We recommend the Tiger Shrimp seared with sherry and garlic and covered in fried anchovies, or the smoked pork shoulder with tiny potatoes that’s mixed with caramelized pieces of apple in a rich sofrito sauce.

The drink list is impressive, too, with a top-shelf assortment
of tequilas and plenty of seasonal cocktails. Just remember:
The Casa serves them strong enough to put the "daze" back in your holidays.

Share the Love

This one is for all the music junkies who prefer to let their friends do all the work. miShare is a smart little gadget for sharing files and play lists between iPods. No computer or cable is needed, and it's super easy to use. Just attach the source and target iPods and press miShare's big button to start the transfer.

The downside? Finding out that your friend had been walking around with Gwen Stefani tracks.

Power to the People

Look no further than local footwear outfit RYZ. This Web-based company, founded by a former President of Adidas, provides an online platform whereby consumers can have their sneaker ideas brought to life via Internet-based design competitions and community voting.

Basically, young designers can simply download a sneaker template, add their graphics, and submit for review by a panel of artists. Then we get to vote on the finalists. Viva la Raza!

We salute you. But for those of us who insist on looking great yet hate the act of shopping, comes IndiTailored.

Basically, you enter your measurements and they keep 'em on file. Then, when you've got a hankerin' for a great dress (or casual) shirt, you choose from the wide selection of classic and contemporary fabrics, choose your cuffs, collar, etc., and in a couple of weeks you've got a shirt that is all you, baby. Genius.

One You Keep

It's inevitable. Some of us must carry bags/briefcases to work. If you're lucky, you deal with a diverse clientele, affording you the opportunity to own a versatile array of bags to fit any situation.

But for the one-bag type, check out national phenom (and local manufacturer) Entermodal. Their stuff deftly says everything you want it to, and nothing you don't, with the kind of craftsmanship that'll have you passing it along to your son on Graduation day.
