  PORTLAND PICKS FOR MEN
  life + style in Stumptown
April 3rd, 2009

Do you like free stuff? We thought so. And we like it when our readers spread the gospel of PPFM. That's why we're parting with some great swag. Here's the deal: Forward the next issue of PPFM to 10 or more friends (after all, more can't hurt), CC us at picks@portlandpicksformen.com, and you could win one of the following:

A Chronograph for your wrist from Alessi Watches.

A Swedish Massage from Aequis Spa.

A round of golf at Colwood.

And who says there's no such thing as a free lunch?

We even have a $50 lunch for two to McCormick and Schmick's.

But remember...forward next week's issue, gents. We don't want your chaps reading this and feeling like your recommendation is strictly swag-based, right?

Portland Picks for Men:

  1

Time We Left (This World Today)

Besides food and shelter, there are two things every man could benefit from that jump immediately to our minds: One is a young woman with a strong libido and no short-term memory, the other is a damn good suit.

Lucky for you, Keep ‘Em Flying Vintage knows more than a bit about suits (you’re on your own with the other one). The owner regrets how recent generations of men have devolved into a culture of casual wear and she is making it her mission to do something about it. The store is well stocked with hats, ties (both skinny and wide) sweaters, dress shoes and boots, leather jackets, overcoats, dress shirts, and (yes! yes!) suits—everything you need to create the look that helped characters like Humphrey Bogart and Frank Sinatra drop more panties than a quadriplegic stock girl in a Victoria’s Secret warehouse.

K.E.F is strictly 1980 and Pre, so you won’t have to sift through racks of printed T’s or corduroy slacks to find that perfectly cultured look... leaving you just one lovely lady and three martinis away from perfection.

Frisky for Whiskey

If there’s one liquor that guys the world over can drink without feeling the least bit self-conscious, it’s whiskey. Whether you like it in a shot glass, over ice, or mixed with soda, whiskey never looks effeminate, pretentious, or weak.

Maybe that’s why the new Whiskey Bar and Grill downtown is raking in the man-love right now. Around forty varieties of scotch, bourbon, and Irish whiskey are all available along with a smattering of decent tap options. Giant floor-to-ceiling windows provide the street-level view, perfect for watching the world go by with a glass of your favorite whiskey in hand, while two pool tables in the back room are free to anyone who gets there first.

When the hunger pangs hit, don’t forget the “Grill” in the title. There’s an excellent menu of hearty sandwiches and hot entrees, the highlight being their whiskey-marinated pulled pork sandwich, a moist, hot and spicy concoction served on a soft bun with a side of delicious seasoned French fries. It’s the perfect companion to that glass of liquid ambrosia you’re sipping.

Chow Downtown

Sandwich-making is an art in this town. While the formula may be familiar—a couple pieces of bread, some choice meats, and creative ingredients—the genius lies in the combinations that come from it, the synthesis of the basic into the sublime.

Breakfast and lunch joint Chow can show you what we mean better than we can tell you. There’s a different bread for just about every sandwich, including baguettes, multigrain, white, French, and toasted beer bread, and the fillings cover vegetarian, meat, seafood, and breakfast items, providing an incredible range of variety for a place that’s only open half the day.

In the morning, we recommend the breakfast burrito, a tasty hodgepodge of eggs, potatoes, jalapeno jack cheese, beans and an awesome roasted tomato and corn sour cream. For lunch, you can’t go wrong with The Great Northwest, a smoked salmon, tomato, and cream cheese sandwich on multigrain bread; or the Pearl Blue Cheese Steak, with onions, roasted red peppers, and mushrooms with a blue cheese spread. Eat up.

Zing

We’ve all got ’em; friends who show up to the golf course woefully short of balls. After a couple of water hazards in the front nine, they begin asking you if you could spare an extra ball… and another, and another.

Revenge is best served with this four-pack of gag balls. One explodes in smoke when hit, one ejects 15 feet of streamer, one implodes into a wall of water, and for the putter, there is the (self-explanatory) wiggly ball.

Green Thumbs Be Damned

Despite our efforts, we are simply not horticulturists. Our significant other long ago proclaimed the yard our domain, and while we are pretty good at trimming and edging, we had trouble with the aesthetic touches.

Then we found the Roll ‘n Grow Garden. Just like sod, you simply unroll and cut into the shape of where it’s going. Not only will your yard look great, but it’ll look like it took you forever, thus scoring you points in the house.

Penman Ship

Most of you remember the “Seinfeld” episode in which he procures a “Space Pen” from an acquaintance so he can write down the comedy bits that come to him while laying in bed in the middle of the night.

Well, these pens are worth their weight in space-age titanium for those of us who aren’t having “What’s the deal with…” ideas at midnight. For instance, we use ours to jot in our travel journal while camping.
