  PORTLAND PICKS FOR MEN
  life + style in Stumptown

June 19th, 2009

Summertime. And the livin's easy. Unless you have a weekly commitment to bringing gents the best Portland has to offer. Which is why, beginning in July, we will be going bi (get your head out of the gutter). Bi-monthly, we mean.

Look for a temporary summer schedule with issues of PPFM delivered to your inbox every 1st and 3rd Friday of the month. Same great content, but we know that we'll all be busy and/or out of town for the summer, so we plan on enjoying the weather. When in doubt, consult our archives for ideas on where to go and what to do.

Now, make like a Mountain Dew commercial, and go have adventures.

Fourth Verse Same As the First

If you’ve never heard an album before and want to know if you’re gonna like it quickly, use this trick record collectors use: play track three of side one and the last track of side two. Add the results and you know what to expect. Discovery is a great thing, but in a time-constrained world it’s important to move on to the good stuff. Like when a first date spends all of dinner staring hungrily at your lips... there’s a point where it’s safe to assume you can skip the movie.

If you’re looking for a great Portland men’s shop: skip to Chapter Four. You’ll find a great representation of up-to-date Portland fashion here. From well-designed print tees to higher-end modern urban wear, CF covers essentials very well. In case you hadn’t noticed, hats are seeing an upsurge in popularity lately, and Chapter Four is well on top of it. A small, but strong collection of accessories rounds out the store and your look.

Mention PPFM during this next week and they will take 20% off any non-sale items. That's a groove any guy could put his needle into.

Sweet Relief

At the end of a long day in the life of an adult, it sure is nice feeling like a kid again.

That’s how we feel at Candy, a new Pearl District lounge and bistro that’s heavy on the wow factor and easy on the eyes. Swathed in candy apple red and midnight black with big comfy leather couches, giant televisions everywhere you look, and touch-screen computers at most tables, there’s enough visual stimuli here to keep you in a constant state of distraction. Add to that the bevy of sweet treats like candy apple mixed cocktails, white-chocolate martinis, alcoholic milkshakes, and pies, pastries, and cakes, and you’ll feel like an eight-year-old with ADD coasting on a sugar high.

To avoid bouncing off the walls, we’d recommend taking full advantage of Candy’s extremely generous happy hour bargains. Massive one-topping pizzas are just $3 from 3-7 p.m. every day, and hefty, juicy burgers with a side of seriously awesome tempura fried green beans are $4. The quality is so high, the portions so large and the prices so cheap, you may just feel like you’ve stolen candy from a baby.

Invasion of the Booty Snatchers

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to tell you that Portland, particularly its urban eating and drinking scene, is going through a major transformation. In the last several months we've seen the arrival of the ever-so-stylish Urban Farmer, Departure, The Original and Nel Centro.

And now the uber-hip Invasion Cafe and Atomic Lounge has crashed down in this town. Located in what used to be a vegan deli in the heart of our notorious nightlife district—the corner of Southwest Fourth Avenue and Washington Street—this split-level, condo-style storefront has gone through a major overhaul and now looks like a cross between a Playboy Mansion party room and one of those swank invite-only clubs you see in London or NYC (in other words, sweet!). A coffeehouse-by-day/swinging-lounge-by-night, Invasion has all the ingredients to be one of the most happening clubs ever (it even features private rooms for those who need to take a “meeting.”)

Once summer kicks into high gear this just might be the hardest place to squeeze into in town. And, oh yeah, it helps if you look like a mannequin. This place is full of them. Really.

Summit in Style

On our climbing expeditions, we usually rely on a standard backpack. Sure, it holds the essentials, but it isn’t exactly built for the purpose.

This summer, we’ll be in much better shape with Mountain Hardwear’s panel-loading crag pack. Durable enough to lay face down in the dirt, it allows you to organize climbing equipment and keep it clean. Complete with compartments designed for clothing, ropes and hardware, it’s so stylish, it’ll draw some admiration.

Old School… Kinda

Most men know that old-school aftershaves are full of alcohol and therefore wreak havoc on your punim. As a result, most of us have gone to a nice soothing balm. But what about the men who miss that hardcore “skin-bracing,” refreshing slap of the aftershaves of yesteryear?

Try Weleda’s After Shave Toner. Rich in witch hazel (and free of alcohol), this baby calms and preps razor bump-prone skin, while delivering that extra oomph Grandpa enjoyed.

Breaking Bad

We’ve used, purchased and reviewed a few mobile speakers in our day. Some simply didn’t make it into these pages. And while we’ve run across some that were so cheap, breaking them wouldn’t be huge, we’ve never encountered any that were durable enough for the biking/skateboarding/snowboarding set.

Until now. SkullyBoom speakers sound awesome and will take an insane lickin’. They also feature a four-hour run time. They won’t be out until next year, but pre-order now and get half off!
