life + style in Stumptown

August 7th, 2009
After the last few weeks, the last couple of days of cooler weather are akin to dying and going to Valhalla (as it’s Norse, we felt it would be cooler than Heaven). Seriously, we grew up in Phoenix, but at least there you’ll find central air and swimming pools en masse. The supplemental window units most Portlanders employ during our short-lived heat waves did about as good of a job during the last few weeks as a post-Katrina FEMA did.
Part of the reason we prefer Portland to destinations south is that there is a much mellower vibe in the air. We’re beginning to think this is because the heat makes people surly. At brew fest, we noted the marked difference between hot, angry drunk people and their general intolerance of their fellow man, and the calm-as-lambs folk who cheerily greeted one another during the Holiday Ale Fest back in December.
Guess what? Same people. And we’re now certain that it wasn’t a lack of Yule-tide spirit that made the difference.
In case you were wondering, we did just waste two minutes of your time talking about the weather.
Still stoked on summer? Forward this email to 5 or more friends and cc us at picks@portlandpicksformen.com and you could win a gift card to swimsuit purveyors UnderU4Men |

Cowboy Up
It’s not every day that a Portlander can impress an out-of-towner, whether they are from such faraway locales as Paris or closer by, like Pasco, Wash.
But a quick trip to the Portland Outdoor Store always seems to do the trick. It’s the only place in this town where a city slicker will find anything remotely resembling the Wild West of Portland’s past. Specializing in classic cowboy apparel, this three-story Western-wear and tack shop has been serving the needs of real (and faux) ranch hands for almost 95 years. Looking for a pair of cowboy boots? They have over 100 styles, including hand-tooled, ostrich and stingray. Want a pair of Levis? They carry sizes 28 to 60. This is also a great spot to stock up on Rockmount Ranch Wear, including those fancy shirts with the cool square snaps—perfect for a night by the campfire. Beyond Western-wear, Portland Outdoor also carries hard-to-find Filson and Barbour outerwear.
On the third floor you’ll find plenty of saddles and bridles. They’re supposed to be for horses. But what you do with them is your business. Yee-haw!

Blessed Bourbon
Among the PPFM crew, whiskey is the indisputable Liquor of Choice. Smoky, sweet, smooth, with just enough heat to remind you you’re drinking alcohol. But where can you find an amazing selection and a homey space to enjoy it?
The answer is the brand-new Pope House up on NW Glisan. Replacing Brazen Bean in a quirky Victorian townhouse, Pope boasts no less than 39 Kentucky bourbons and plenty of Tennessee, Canadian, Scotch, and rye whiskeys, too. They’ve also mastered the art of the mixed drink. We recommend the Derby Cooler, an intricate blend of bourbon, rum, and grenadine, plus a little OJ and lemon juice, or the admittedly girly Slush, a frozen mix of bourbon, OJ, lemonade and tea that you should steal sips from when no one’s looking.
Wash it down with a plate of homespun cuisine straight from the Kentucky cookbook, like the Pulled Pork Panini which smothers juicy pork in cheese and onions between two slices of jalapeño bread. Enjoy it and other lip-smacking plates for just $4–$5 during the Pope’s happy hour. It’s the answer to all your prayers.

Passenger Engine Peddler
The statement “you can’t lose at a game you don’t play” is usually just an escape clause for the insecure, but we’re applying it to automobiles this week. Thinking about it, the only thing linking most of us to the “system” is our cars. Ever been pulled over for walking? Not to mention parking fees, parking fines, gas, insurance and tune-ups. Considering that bicycles and busses are the usual options, it appears that the only things Americans hate more than harassment and poverty is exercise and smelling a stranger’s B.O.
So, for those tired of the game, there’s the Recyclery. Already known for their custom rebuilds, fair prices and parts swapping readiness, their new store in Ladd’s Circle is revolution ready. You can purchase bikes at the shop, get a tune-up, or purchase accessories. And if you want something built just for you, the Recyclery can do that, too.
If the joy of riding a bike alone isn’t enough for you, remember: every push down on a pedal is a finger up to the man—and another dollar in your pocket.

The Four Seasons
Ah, summer. The great outdoors. Everyone gets out there to a campsite at least once and puts up their mammoth tent. But there are those of us whose excursions are year-round, and take us beyond campgrounds to remote hunting grounds, or the side of a mountain in November.
For us, there is the Spire 2.1 by Mountain HardWear. At about five pounds, and built to withstand gale-force winds and snow, it is the best tent investment out there.

In Case You Haven’t Heard…
So we don’t normally bring news of products from gargantuan outfits like Google, but they have the coolest new thing and we know way too many people who haven’t heard about it.
Google Voice does a number of cool things like letting you listen to your voicemails as they’re being left, sending you texts of your transcribed voicemails, and more. It will be the norm in less than a year, but it’s currently by invitation only, so sign up pronto!
