  PORTLAND PICKS FOR MEN
  life + style in Stumptown

Note to Portland shops: We need more casual menswear. Note to Portland guys: There’s more to life than t-shirts/jeans or khakis/workwear. Nuff said.

Back to Cool

The sweetest “girls-only” shopping haunt on East Burnside has just expanded to allow the “boys” to see what all the hubbub is about.

Although Moxie hasn’t “officially” launched their men’s section quite yet, they have put some pretty terrific new stuff out on the floor. Not only do they have the peasant-meets-vacationing-prince Tom’s shoes, they also carry the fashion-forward Skunkfunk (out of Barcelona, Spain), as well as arty/nifty threads from Lifetime Collective. For those dudes who want to look dapper (or just have a really cool way of covering that ever-growing bald spot) this is also the joint to don a jaunty Brixton hat. Don’t want to go so uptown formal? Well, just slip into a really comfy tee from Ames Bros. and No Wire Hangers and you’ll be set.

Moxie is having a sale from Sept. 5 through the 10th, where everything in the store is marked down 20 percent (except for the really groovy artwork). So guys, there is no excuse to keep your ass out of this store. Now get off that Moxie man couch.

Red Meat

For some reason, Communist Soviet Union appears to be making a comeback… as a punch line. Nowadays, we see its familiar iconography all over the place, whether it’s on a jokey t-shirt, as the ironic name for some quirky rock band, or most recently, as the theme for a great new sandwich joint in Old Town.

Fortunately, the only thing funny about The People’s Sandwich of Portland is its logo; the chow is seriously good. Open for lunch every day and until 3 a.m. on Friday and Saturday evenings, TPSP offers gut-packing hot sandwiches filled with quality cuts of house-cured meats, fresh veggies, and a variety of gooey melted cheeses on fresh, local breads. The house special is probably the Portland Cheese Steak with its Northwest beef, Provolone and American cheeses, onions and peppers, although the Argento Arrabiata gives it a run for its money with spicy Italian cuts, house ham, and provolone on a warm, soft roll. Vegetarians are also in for a treat with either the pesto-baked tofu People Sandwich or the all veggie and cheese Portlandia Uber Alles.

If you’re thirsty for something to wash it down, both draft beer and bottled wine will be available soon. We’re hoping for a couple good reds.

  3 Space Travel

Color it daydreaming, getting drunk, or rubber suits and safe words—escapism is one of man’s greatest abilities. It allows us time away from our physical selves when our physical selves can’t go, and elevates the great into the fantastic when they can. If you’ve ever imagined your lover was someone else, you know what we’re talking about.

When getting out of the house isn’t enough, get away at the Roadside Attraction. From the jazz and folk tunes to the decor that looks as though it was purchased at the joint garage sale of Dr. Fu Manchu and Johnny Quest; Roadside transports you out of the everyday. The aesthetic alone is initially shocking and worth the trip. Add to it: a tree-lined and covered patio with porch swing and campfire, free jukebox, hideaway seating for intimate gatherings, pool table and curio eye candy galore.

Roadside doesn’t ruin a good thing by pushing fancy cocktails, and you will definitely be wise to order beer and basic drinks here. Comfort food is on the menu, comfort is all around, and if you can imagine how good that feels, bring your body in and get away.

Wake up Right

Waking up can be a bitch—even more so when it’s not by choice. Unlike our farming friends, we don’t have the luxury of naturally being roused by the sun for a day’s work outside.

That’s why we love Philips’ wake-up light. With 20 brightness settings, you can wake up gradually without suffering from the standard buzz. It also can be used as a desk lamp and sports an iPod dock and radio for musical accompaniment. Nice.

Cook Right

Camping in the great outdoors is a wonderful thing. There is nothing quite like spending several days in the same change of clothes, convening with the birds and the bears. Yet one drawback for us, at least, is in regard to our cookware.

Ditch the foil-wrap and hobo cookbook for REI’s lightweight Flex 4 System Cookset. With a crapload of nesting ware, this set has everything, including dinner plates and mugs for four.

Accessorize Right

Men generally do not have nearly as many shoes as women—and rightly so. This does not mean, however, that we can get by with just one trusty pair for everyday wear and another for weddings, funerals, and meeting the Queen.

Among the various pairs of footwear we ought to have is a good pair of boots. Neither Wellies nor snowshoes—but a proper pair of Fossil’s Dean Tall leather boots. Looking good.
