  PORTLAND PICKS FOR MEN
  life + style in Stumptown
July 2, 2010

Beer. Bier. Ale. Lager. Suds. We love it all! Which is why we’re dedicating this issue to the suds. We’ve done hours of extensive research, because we here at PPFM are willing to take one for the team. We don’t want to make ourselves out to be heroes or martyrs, but the names Mandela and Ghandi were kicked around abundantly. Seriously, you’ll wanna archive this here email, and consult it like an oracle before going beer shopping.

And because it’s Portland Picks for Men, we’re limiting our selections to offerings from our city and outlying regions. Trust us, one need look no further to find the best. Plus, you’ll be supporting the local economy while keeping Portland atop a heap of lesser-beer cities! And because it’s summer, we’re gonna focus on stuff that may be good all year ’round, but sings to us in summer. Come fall, we’re back to Single Malt Scotch anyway, right?

PPFM’s Beer Spectacular:

  1

Brewery: Upright Brewing Brew: Four

Four is truly a light yet flavorful beer. The recipe uses a good portion of wheat and incorporates a sour mash into the process to make it slightly tart and extra refreshing. It has delicate aromas and flavors that span a range of floral, grassy and herbal notes.

The finish is extra dry and makes the beer a great beverage to pair with food—especially shellfish—making it perfect for that summer clambake!

Brewery: Roots Organic Brewing Brew: Burghead Heather Ale

This ale was brewed by the ancient tribes of Britannia more than 4,000 years ago, but you can grab a pony keg from these locals right here in PDX!

Brewed without hops but organic Heather tips, organic honey and organic malts, Roots’ award-winning ale may be the most interesting ale you’ve ever had! Bonus: Unlike hops, Heather contains no estrogen, so say goodbye to those man-boobs!

Brewery: Widmer Brothers Brew: Drifter Pale Ale

This unique pale ale from Widmer Brothers seems to have ended up in our hands at many a BBQ and baseball game lately, and it’s refreshing, citrusy hop aroma and flavor are a welcome change from the usual bitterness of most American pale ales.

We’ve had some experience in this department, so trust us when we say that this may be one of the best beers to pair with a burger.

Brewery: Captured by Porches Brew: Invasive Species IPA

The one problem with most IPAs is that they get so hop-centric they leave out even a trace of malt. We thought Deschutes had conquered this with their Inversion, but we needed an option brewed closer to home.

Malty and full in the front, and balanced by hop bitterness, Invasive Species uses Kent Golding hops to provide an aromatic finish to this crisp, rich brew. Made with 100% organic grains, regionally grown and locally malted.

Brewery: Alameda Brewhouse Brew: Siskiyou Golden Ale

We remember our 20s (barely). We insisted on lots of alcohol in our beer. But we’ve grown up, and now demand the right taste for the right occasion. This beer’s a light, pleasing ale made especially for a hot summer’s day, and brewed in the traditional German Kolsch style.

A touch of wheat gives the brew a creamy body, and German Hersbrucker hops add a mellow flavor to the finish. This one would go great with fish or a nice summer salad.

Brewery: Widmer Brothers Brew: Widmer Hefeweizen

Sunshine = Hefeweizen time. Simple as that. Widmer Hefeweizen is the classic summer beer that never seems to get old. Whether you squeeze the lemon in the beer, rub the rim with it, or don’t use one at all, you can’t go wrong with this Portland icon.

Widmer also comes in a 5-liter can—pick up one on the way to a party so you won’t be the guy who brings the gallon tub of potato salad.

Brewery: Laurelwood Brewing Co. Brew: Workhorse IPA

We had to end it with a bang, and in a beer world where IPA is king, we had to bring you one that packs a punch—and one that may have been off your radar.

Workhorse is a true West Coast IPA, featuring over-the-top hop flavor and aroma. Three separate dry hop additions in the fermenter make this one of the hoppiest beers on this list. And 7.5% makes it one of the strongest. Pointed enough to cut through the spicy bbq sauce on that beef brisket.
