August 13, 2010
We are back! To bring you up to speed: The new PPFM staff met for the first time on a quiet Thursday night at a NE bar. What followed (after the obligatory five-slaps and fist-pounds) was an engaging bullsh*t session about what we want to do here. We talked about being honest, having fun, and where we see ourselves going, and debated the age-old question that comes up during the searing of meat and vegetables: Gas or charcoal?
Gas takes it with convenience, but we’ll happily trade it for the reason we’re ’cueing in the first place—taste. Case in point: We made hamburgers on a charcoal grill the other night and sprinkled hickory wood chips over the fire. The result was a nigh orgasmic burger that had a quality gas grills can’t touch; that je ne sais quoi that only comes from food cooked with fire and smoke.
As for PPFM, collective efforts and a new vision are bringing an invigorating breath of fresh air to us. We are ready to once again spread the good news about what’s happening in Portland. Like what you see? Sign up a friend at www.PortlandPicksforMen.com. After all, it’s a question of taste.
Speaking of taste, forward this issue to 5 friends and CC picks@portlandpicksformen.com, and you could win one of two $25 gift certificates to Lincoln restaurant.

If You Build It…
Someone is a genius. They took all our favorite pastimes: eating food, sipping local brews, listening to live music, and put them all together with a massive patio.
Situated adjacent to the locally-legendary Mississippi Studios is the unapologetically-named Bar Bar, and they’re shamelessly in cahoots. Hungry? The classic burger (or veg variety) and thin-cut fries are can’t-go-wrong faves. If you’ve got a sweet tooth, check out the dessert offerings, which on our visit included a Random Order pie and a luxurious brownie. Famously delightful! If you’re only in it for the booze, the cocktail menu is printed in English. Named for the lines of the treble clef, our EGBDF didn’t get us FACE’d, though we did start playing behind the beat after a coupla drinks (it’s a properly muddled whiskey smash).
Flame-borne and electric candlelight gives the inside a dim, warm feel, but the spacious outdoor patio is actually bigger than the bar itself. Catch a breeze and people-watch the bearded, the bespectacled, and the unadorned. Just pack it up and head back inside by 11 pm. We can live with that.

Get Your Portland Accent
You’ve heard the saying, “Dress for the job you want.” It just dawned on us that “dressing for the life you want” is also apropos.
After just 10 minutes in Shop Adorn, we totally got it. They’ve been around for a while, under the radar, with a knack for anticipating the trends before they happen. This one shop can completely accessorize our masculinity while also keeping it intact. We’re really into the new fall lines from kid robot, obey (new fall merch arrives next week!), Alternative Apparel, and WeSC, the William Rast denim is awesome, and so are the Manhattan Portage bags. (There’s even a bargain bin packed full of last season’s hoodies… and hoodie weather’s just around the corner.) In fact, everything’s reasonably priced, so you won’t have to sell a kidney to get a respectable ensemble for under $130, denim included—and in true Portland style, something that seems deliberately thrown together in a very accidental way.
Shop Adorn makes it possible to fully embrace the style we want, and we’ll have enough change left over to grab lunch and an afternoon beer.

Sweet Emotion
As guys, we all know that there are only two specific events in life when it’s appropriate to cry: when someone dies, and when your favorite team wins a championship. That’s it. Breakups, broken bones and sad movies? No, no and hell no!
But after paying a visit to the recently opened Pine State Biscuits location on NE Alberta, we’re ready to add one more to the list: when you realize there’s a restaurant solely dedicated to smothering your favorite food items in gravy and serving them to you sandwiched in between two halves of a light and fluffy buttermilk biscuit. Our tear duct-tickling moment came in the form of "The Reggie," where crispy fried chicken, mouthwatering bacon, cheese, house-made gravy and a fresh biscuit all come together to create perhaps the most emotionally taxing sandwich ever made—it’s just that good.
This popular breakfast and lunch joint is a must-visit, but don’t forget to bring a box of Kleenex. After all, every man should show his sensitive side from time to time.

That Perfect Fit
Good denim, like a well-worn leather glove, should mold to your body and stay that way—for good. It’s like falling for someone—you know instantly if it’s right.
We’re spending our ducats on locally designed Agave Denim. Utilizing fabrics like Supima cotton (feels like pajamas, looks like pants) and even Japanese raw denim, when we tried on a pair of “Gringos,” we knew they were made for us. Find your favorite pair at Mario's and Mario’s 3.10, or online.

Bringin’ it Back, Waaay Back
Most of us here at PPFM wax nostalgic over old, geeky video games. (Remember when the cover art had nothing to do with the actual graphics?)
This kitschy decal wall art is one of the best ways to pay homage to vintage games, and we can design the stickers however we want, or we could follow the instructions (but who does that?). Dedicate a piece of wall to Super Mario Brothers, or our favorite, Donkey Kong.

Morning Wood
Usually our morning routine is dictated by how many times we hit the snooze. By the
third time, we’re finger-brushing our teeth and hoping mismatched running shoes are in style.
When we came across locally made WOOD hand cream, our morning routine became much more enjoyable. With essential oils from cedar and hiba, it’ll wake you up, man-style, and you won’t smell like you stepped out of a Good Housekeeping ad, no matter how late you are.
